Pekin 2008 is in the books and we have a new champion. 12 teams from Central Illinois got together to compete in only the 2nd annual Pekin Getaway Games event. THE rake, playing in their 4th event as a franchise, finally took home the Cup and the StubNation.com prizes. "Experience plays a huge role in being successful at GG. Not only will your scores improve, but you will also have much more fun participating in multiple games. Stated captain of THE rake Matt Bainter. Becoming familiar with how difficult it is to consistently swing a softball bat as hard as you can for 1 minute allows you to pace yourself to continue to score throughout the entire 60 second time frame. Experienced gamers pace themselves correctly to maximize their score and ultimately have more fun."They were distantly followed by Bartonville Pride and Salty Clams, rounding out the top 3. Wes Adams of THE rake captured the MVG by placing 11th in bowling, 10th in HR Derby, 12.5 in Sure Shot, and 6th in Hold'em. Those rankings are a true testimony and reminder that you don't have to dominate at anything to compete and even win Getaway Games. We asked captain Matt Bainter what he thought about Wes being MVG, "Not surprised to see Wes up near the top. Wes doesn't have a weakness and has the potential to finish in the top 10 of all 5 events. He is not the type of gamer that is one dimensional and trying to win one or two events. His focus is about being above average at all 5. Wes proves you dont have to be a D1 college athlete to be successful at GG." Drew Chitwood finished right behind Wes in the MVG hunt. The first team was rounded out by Drew Chitwood, Matt Bainter, Jason Friedrich and Billy Lyons. A huge thanks to all teams/gamers for making this such a great day. We hope to see you all out for another Central Illinois event and again in Pekin next year. Notable Gamers: Returning Champs: Sponsors: |

The first annual Getaway Games fundraiser event in Oswego is complete and was a huge success. 10 teams showed up on Memorial Day weekend to be a gamer. Host coach of Oswego East Basketball, Jason Buckley and his squad, Pete Rose's Last Bet were the overall champions while The Crack Attack and Old School were just behind. Elbert Choi took the MVG title by placing 1st in Softball and 2nd in Hold'em. We had several records broken including the Sure Shot individual round and total. More on that in the Sure Shot details. The event was a long day that received rave reviews. Hopefully Oswego East benefited from this event and we can continue partnering with them going forward!Prominent Gamers: Sponsors: |

Luckily the success of an event is not based on the number of teams. The Champaign turnout wasn't the best, but the quality of the event was at it's highest. Teams and players from Central Illinois, Champaign, St. Louis and Phoenix gathered on Saturday for the 3rd ever Getaway Games event. The weather was perfect and the competition was fierce. The All In Boys snuck by with their 3rd consecutive championship, just edging out THE rake by a point. The facilities were great to work with and were first class facilities. Thanks to everyone involved and look forward to growing and expanding Champaign in 2008.

Congrats to the All In Boys on winning their 2nd consecutive Getaway Games event. The won the Bloomington/Normal event in a truly amazing comeback fashion. Down by 7 ranks going into the last sport (Texas Hold'em) the boys dominated Hold'em with all 4 guys placing in the top 10 giving them the 1st place rank with an OVS of 19. The leader at the time - Controlled Chaos - didn't get the cards and went out in Hold'em in a disappointing 9th place leaving them 1 behind the All In Boys for the Overall Championship with an OVS of 20. Team E-Town finished directly behind in 3rd place with an OVS of 23.
Overall, it was a very talented, fun and competitive event. The weather was unbelievable - not too hot, no rain, perfect! Thanks to everyone who came out for the Normal Getaway Games event - we will see you all next year if not in Champaign on the 22nd of September. |
