Pekin 2008 is in the books and we have a new champion. 12 teams from Central Illinois got together to compete in only the 2nd annual Pekin Getaway Games event. THE rake, playing in their 4th event as a franchise, finally took home the Cup and the StubNation.com prizes. "Experience plays a huge role in being successful at GG. Not only will your scores improve, but you will also have much more fun participating in multiple games. Stated captain of THE rake Matt Bainter. Becoming familiar with how difficult it is to consistently swing a softball bat as hard as you can for 1 minute allows you to pace yourself to continue to score throughout the entire 60 second time frame. Experienced gamers pace themselves correctly to maximize their score and ultimately have more fun."
They were distantly followed by Bartonville Pride and Salty Clams, rounding out the top 3. Wes Adams of THE rake captured the MVG by placing 11th in bowling, 10th in HR Derby, 12.5 in Sure Shot, and 6th in Hold'em. Those rankings are a true testimony and reminder that you don't have to dominate at anything to compete and even win Getaway Games. We asked captain Matt Bainter what he thought about Wes being MVG, "Not surprised to see Wes up near the top. Wes doesn't have a weakness and has the potential to finish in the top 10 of all 5 events. He is not the type of gamer that is one dimensional and trying to win one or two events. His focus is about being above average at all 5. Wes proves you dont have to be a D1 college athlete to be successful at GG." Drew Chitwood finished right behind Wes in the MVG hunt. The first team was rounded out by Drew Chitwood, Matt Bainter, Jason Friedrich and Billy Lyons. A huge thanks to all teams/gamers for making this such a great day. We hope to see you all out for another Central Illinois event and again in Pekin next year.

Bowling Summary:
|
Bowling started promptly at 7:15 in the morning. Everyone was in attendance early and ready to get rolling with the day. A slight setback in regards to bowling shoes, but when you have a day that includes 5 sports, you don't sweat some of the small stuff. 4 Headless Horsemen jumped out to the early lead after the first game of bowling due to consistency (all 4 over 160). Brad Degoyler put up a 208 mark in Game 1 showing that the Salty Clams will be a force to reckon with. Game 2 saw some sick bowling scores. Darin Bowling jumped from a 161 to a stunning 279 mark in Game 2 - catapulting the Salty Clams to a record breaking 819 single round and the first place bowling title with 1510. 4 Headless Horsemen finished 2nd with a 1481 with Submerged in Winning Juice in 3rd. Darin Bowling won the close individual race with a 440, followed by Jason Jenkins (434) and Brad Degoyler (431). Scores were updated and announced and the guys were off to Softball/Sure Shot.
Tidbits:
Only one team, coffee and doughnuts, finished under 1000 pins. Not a good way for the Getaway Games founder, Joel Peterson, to start.
Again, how does someone bowl a 161 and follow that up with a 279 (Darin Bowling)? I guess it was the 7:15 start time screwing things up.
Chris Whitaker went from a 91 in GM 1 to a 211 in GM 2.

16 inch HR Derby Summary:
|
Gamers could not have asked for a better day. 80 degrees, sunny, slight wind blowing out for lefties, perfect field conditions at the Pekin Park Districts top Softball Diamond. The HR Derby kicked off a bit early as rounds typically take longer than Sure Shot. The first big mark came after about 5-6 teams went through. Gutter Ballin (previously Whitaker) broke the all-time HR derby record with a 280 thanks to Chris Whitaker and Steve Cottrell hitting some bombs. A bit later in the day, Champaign HR Derby champs THE rake came up and put on a show finishing with a whopping 344 number that will be tough to beat. Billy Lyons of THE rake won the event with a 111 score, falling just short of the current GG record. Billy is a big lefty so nobody can claim it was the "wind" for him. Chris Whitaker finished behind Billy with a 105 score.
Tidbits:
No gamer finished with a score of 0. Impressive!
Billy Lyons hit a total of 7 five point bombs (220+ ft.)
Chris Whitaker was automatic hitting 14 four pointers (200-220 ft.)
Dean Janssen led all gamers with 11 one pointers (140-160 ft.)
THE rake used the "three" strategy nailing 39 three point HRs beating the next by 12.

Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
|
Basketball Sure Shot was held at the Pekin Boys Club where they had 2 nice gyms ready and available for gamers. Overall, it was a light shooting group but a top softball group. THE rake took a surprising 1st place finish with a 315 mark, followed up by coffee & doughnuts at 291 and Very Little Game with 282. In comparison, the 315 was just 9th all-time. Jay Bucy edged out Joel Peterson for the individual championship scoring a 125 compared to Joel's 120. Jason Friedrich rounded out the top 3 with a 100.
Tidbits:
Joel Peterson was the first gamer to successfully use the 10-5-10-5 shooting strategy by hitting 7 10's in total.
Steve Peterson destroyed the "layup" record with 18 one pointers.
Jason Marvel of the Salty Clams is now "Mr. Midrange" as he broke the all-time two pointer record with 17.
Chuch Eiker of Thick and Thin went from a 22 in RD1 to a 58 in RD2.

Golf Summary:
|
What a great day on the golf course. Not for scores, but for weather and fun, it was. Teams were either exhausted from the first 3 sports or just not on their golf game today as -4 won the round. Grumblings of tough pin placements came from Gamers as they struggled through with many par's and bogey's. When it came down to it, The A-Team won with -4 as they beat Salty Clams in the tie-breaker. 5 other finished under par while the rest were over.
Tidbits:
Matt Bainter came within 4 feet of hitting the hole in one for a free LCD TV sponsored by Jimmy Johns.
The $10,000 hole in one prize was definitely placed on the toughest par 3 on the course.
Total play time was 4:30 - 5:00...

Texas Hold'em Summary:
|
Four sports are in but the ultimate "equalizer" is still to come. Guys enjoyed some dinner as they came in from the links and we went through the first prize ceremony. Not long after, the cards were being dealt in a 48 player Texas Hold'em tourney. Ted Barr started things off being the first to go all-in and lose, somebody has got to do it Ted! Play continued and was pretty slow for the first hour. Things really started progressing and by 10:30 we were down to our final table. Several all-in moments later, Bob Moreno of Submerged in Winning Juice prevailed and was crowned the champion. Jason Friedrich finished in 2nd place. No surprise, THE rake finished in 1st place followed by Very Little Game and Bartonville Pride. Final prizes were given and the night came to a close.
Tidbits:
Joel Peterson was the "average joe card player" finishing in 32nd place.
THE rake finished with all four guys at 17th or better.
Bob Moreno knocked out a ton of guys all night - we don't have the official number yet - but soon!
