    Bowling Summary:
The Pekin event started off bright an early with 6:10 AM check-in time. All players were accounted for by 6:45 and the gamers were ready to bowl! Prominent Gamers for the Pekin Event were announce as follows:

    1. Dennis Celletti - General in the US Army.
    2. Steve Peterson - Retired Colonel in the US Army.
    3. Ron Carrothers - Former successful Dunlap girls basketball coach.
    4. Justin Clark - Owner of local Jimmy John's restaurants and sponsor of the Pekin Getaway Games Event.

Bowling began just after 7:00 AM and the pins started falling. The Lions and Norfolk and Chance jumped out to a fast start with 680 and 663 first round scores. The All In Boys and Tunica Crew had some lane troubles forcing them to move lanes and interrupt their flow - nothing an early morning drink couldn't solve though! The Lions blew the field away in game 2 with a record setting 773 score moving their total pins for the two games to 1453. Norfolk and Chance followed up strong with a 615 for 1278 to take 2nd place. And the All In Boys squeaked out 3rd place but a matter of 30-40 pins separated them from 7th place. As they always say, every pin counts.

Bryan Lehman of the Lehman Family took home the individual crown bowling a 215 and 223 for a combined 238 score. Gary Kelch came in close behind with a 407 (183,204). Then the Lions came in with three in a row - Billy Lyons (393), Wes Adams (389), Matt Bainter (380).

    Tidbits
  • Mike Whitaker of team Whitaker went from a 98 during game 1 to a 214 in game 2. Thats a 116 pin difference. I guess he needed to 'wake up' literally.
  • Doug Lehman was the only bowler to miss out on the action and it's been said that he may have won the individual crown.
  • Dad's and Sons had 4 individual games where they scored a 111. There team going forward should be - 111.
  • There were a total of 6 scores under 100.
  • There were a total of 7 scores over 200.

    16 inch HR Derby Summary:
It was a gorgeous day for the 16 inch HR Derby competition. The lines were all set at 180,200,220 with flags making it apparant to the hitters where their marks were. Teams started out real slow in this competition due to their lack of hitting a 16 inch softball and to lack of experience in a 'timed' hitting competition. Things stayed pretty mediocre until Getaway Games MVP Jeff Rogers of Norfolk and Chance came to the plate. The lefty belted out 29 points including 9 (yes i repeat 9) 3 point bombs. Jeff and Gary Kelch went on to each hit 17 in round 2 increasing Norfolk's final score to 78. A little later came up Justin Carley and the All In Boys. Carley belted out an impressive 27 in round 1 but it wasn't quite enough. In round 2, the righty drilled 34 points including 7 2's and 6 3's increasing his total point total to 61. All in Boys finished with 78 as well - but Justin won the tiebreaker with his round of 34 giving the All In Boys first place and Norfolk and Chance coming in right behind. Tunica Crew had the most balanced attack scoring 75 with no individual scoring over 33.

The wind was blowing slightly out to RF and the field conditions were perfect - a bit hot. Guys were pretty exhausted when they were done with their 2 minutes.

    Tidbits
  • Gary Kelch hit just 2 points in round 1 followed up by 17 in round 2. Look out next time Gary is around!
  • How important is the pitcher? Ask anyone that played - they are very important.
  • Billy Lyons is a darkhorse to win the next competition he plays in now that he has 'figured it out'.

    Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
The Basketball Sure Shot was probably one of the most action packed events in the Getaway Games. Teams and players all had their own strategy on what combination of 2's, 5's and 10's to shoot. Some of the early teams settled for the 2's and 5's while most of the later teams decided 5's and some 10's were the way to go. Scores were fairly moderate until sharpshooter Tony Pippin of All In Boys came up and drilled 65. The very next shooter, Justin Carley of All In Boys, hit 70 the very next round. Obviously this gave the All In Boys quite a first round start of 180. The Icy Hot Stallions made a run at the All In Boys in round 2 but fell just short finishing with 313 (All In Boys had 340).

There was a lot of excitement in the gym and people were around most of the time watching this event. It was hot - but not too hot.

    Tidbits
  • 4 players scored a total of 100+ points.
  • 1 player scored under 10.
  • A total of 18 10's were hit.
  • Norfolk and Chance hit 4 10's.

    Golf Summary:
After a small lunch break and some time to regroup in the clubhouse. It was time for the 18 hole golf scramble in the intense heat. The tee-off order was announced in reverse order of the current standings. Things were quiet out on the golf course as guys were concentrating hard on their game. Early word that team Getaway was winning was no surprise as two of their players were members at Sunset Hills Golf Course. Not a lot of known interesting stories from the golf course so I guess that's a good thing.

After all the scores were gathered and entered in, Getaway did come away with the victory at -10. Whitaker was close behind with -8 and the Icy Hot Stallions ended with -7. The first team to return to the clubhouse, Dad's and Sons, were proud that their +10 held up as the top score for like 15 minutes! Way to go guys!

    Tidbits
  • People had said that -15 could win this scramble. Did the golfers not show up?

    Texas Hold'em Summary:
At this point everything is still right on time and on schedule. People are starting to get WORN OUT! Dinner was served in the Golf Clubhouse giving gamers some extra energy. The First Awards ceremony was held and lots of great prizes were given out. Now it was time for the ultimate mental game - Texas Hold'em. Five tables of 8 gamers were set and the clock began. Things started off slow like most hold'em tourneys do. But after an hour - things started heating up. As the blinds grew, the All-In moments increased. Two breaks, lots of table moves and combinations later, the final table was set. Steve Peterson was the clear chip leader going into the final table and he came away from the final table the first ever individual champion. Funny thing is, he had NEVER played in a Texas Hold'em tourney in his life. He just learned the game the Wednesday before the event. Great work. Rory Woodside put up a good fight but came in 2nd place. The Lions came away with the team award with 2 guys at the final table and an overall score of 59.

Final awards were given and everything was done by 11:15.

    Tidbits
  • Mike Whitaker was first to exit the tournament.
  • Despite Steve Peterson winning the tourney, Dad's and Sons still finished in 9th place.
  • Wes Adams and Jay Bucy of the Lions finished 4th and 6th respectively from the same team.
