The 2nd annual Getaway Games fundraiser event for Oswego East Boys Basketball is in the books. What a great day! 16 teams of gamers showed up and had a great day. First time team, Tommy Nevin's Pub, took the team title by placing an impressive 1st, 4th, 10th, 2nd and 1st in the five events. They were distantly followed by last years champs, Hochuli's Homeboys and SOB Story. The MVG went to 2nd year gamer from the DG Ballas, Steve Szymanski. Steve absolutely dominated the field winning the MVG by a full 19 positions. He finished 7th in bowling, 8th in HR Derby, 4th in Sure Shot, and 5th in Hold'em. Great performance! The weather was great, not too hot and not too cold. A little rain during golf but nothing to put a damper on things. Overall, scores were better this year for the returning gamers showing that experience matters. In 2010 these guys will be Gamer pro's!

Bowling Summary:
Bowling scores were well improved in Oswego from the 2008 event. In 2008 the gamers average just over 270 in total (135 a game). This event, the Oswego crew averaged close to 286 or a 142 average. They must have put in the offseason practice to raise those scores. Tommy Nevin's Pub won the bowling event with a 1330 and Rob Kosciuk (Step-Brothers) edged out Abe Carretto (Soul in the Hole) with a 389. Mike Jezioro (One Sure Thing) is still wondering why bowling is included and thinks it's a dumb sport after bowling a 163... Combined in 2 games! Brunswick Zone Naperville was a great bowling facility and things went smooth as ever here.

16 inch HR Derby Summary:
This years softball portion was split up onto two separate fields. The fields were back to back and facing opposite directions so the gamers hit one round on each field to make things fair. Total scores were up a bit from last year improving from 35 to 38 on average. Central Illinois gamer, Justin Carley (MVGamers), edged out Chris Ignash (DG Ballas) with 87 HR's to win the competion. Ignash finished with 86 and Matt Engelhardt finished in 3rd with 82. Last years champ, Elbert Choi, must have went off the steroids because he went from 109 last year to 70 this year. Ignash led the DG Ballas to the 1st place finish as they totalled 229. SOB Story was right behind them with 225 total. Overall a great day at the fields. It ran a little slow but the weather was great and wind was low. Special thanks to the Oswego Hoops volunteers for helping time, field and score the fields!

Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
Sure Shot was the one event that was down a little bit from 2008. Not much, but on average from 60 to 56. Matt Engelhardt (SOB Story) put on a clinic and turned in the 4th highest score ever with a 135. The next highest score was a 110. The DG Ballas also won Sure Shot and just edged out Old School with 315 points. The gym was set up with 2 courts running at the same time. Scoreboard was used as the timer which was a great improvement. Thanks to the Oswego East Hoops guys for helping with scoring! Co-Founder of Getaway Games, Joel Peterson, was supposed to dominate this event. Sure Shot is his thing. Joel went home unsatisfied after turning in a 65 in total. The highlite of the event was the "introductions" or "entry" onto the court by 1st and 20. It has been told that they were decked out in headbands and made a "starting lineup" style entry onto the court. Running around the court and warming up for their Sure Shot round. Classic. Just wish we had some video to share.

Golf Summary:
Golf! Fox Valley Golf Club was the location of this years scramble. The forecast was rain all day. But Getaway Games kept this bad weather away and escaped with just a few showers here or there during the 16 tee times of golf. Not to shabby! Hochuli's Homeboys repeated as golf champions shooting -11 on the day. Do any of you other Oswego coaches believe them? Actually the score wasn't THAT great as we had two teams come in with a -10 and another with a -8. So great golf guys and can you make it 3 for 3 in 2010? The course played well and everyone was finished in 4-4.5 hours.

Texas Hold'em Summary:
The FV Kickers Club was 1st class for the dinner and hold'em. The dinner was huge. A never ending buffet of sandwhiches and brats, potato salad, cookies and chips. Great stuff by the Kickers. Prizes were given out and Hold'em began. And it kept going, and going and going. Turned out to be the longest Hold'em tournament in Getaway Games history ending close to midnight. Elbert Choi (Old School) took down the prize while Tommy Nevin's Pub won the team award for this event. After several knocked over beers and a few verbal confrontations, Hold'em finally ended and it was time to hammer out the prizes and give out the coveted GG Cup!
