This past Saturday was the 2nd Normal, IL Getaway Games event and it was just about a perfect event. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and 16 teams of "gamers" were out bright and early in the morning for the festivities. The guys battled all day but when it was all said and done, a familiar ending was to be had. The All in Boys captured their 4th ever and 2nd consecutive Bloomington/Normal title by just edging out the newcomers, Under the Radar. It was an impressive showing by the All In Boys with finishes of 4th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st in the five sports.
Pekin champs, THE rake rounded out the top 3 in this talented event. Speaking of THE rake, Jay Bucy captured his first ever MVG title and deserving he was. Jay finished in 21st, 3rd, 1st and 14th in the four individual sports. "Jay is the prototype of a Getaway Gamer." Stated co-founder Ryan Knuppel. "He is quite the athlete that can do just about everything. We look for Jay to be a contender in any event he plays in."
It was great to see many repeat gamers out for another event. But it was even more pleasing to meet and see so many new faces. Hopefully you have become Getaway Gamers for life.

Bowling Summary:
|
Registration and warmups went without a hitch as Circle Lanes in B/N was quite the first class facility. Everyone was on time and ready to bowl. Once again the Normal 2008 event had some great bowling teams in it. It seems as though bowling is really becoming a draw for Getaway Gamers. Five of the scores made the top 12 scores ever. Bound for Last, featuring former PBA member Matt Kirkpatrick won the bowling event with a 1488 score (3rd best). But Matt was outlasted by underdog Lee Gerrietts for the individual bowling title. Lee bowled a very impressive 458 series which came in for 2nd best ever. Matt Kirkpatrick and Jason Jenkins followed close behind for the individual while Submerged in Winning Juice and ILL Gamers rounded out the top 3 for teams.
Tidbits:
The Fab 4 weren't so fabulous as they were the only team not to break 1000 pins. Ouch!
JD Mahoney of the ILL Gamers jumped from a 101 1st game to a 170 2nd game. Better wake up earlier next time JD!

16 inch HR Derby Summary:
|
This is starting to sound like a broken record, but once again we had perfect weather for this Getaway Games event. Softball was just perfect. Barely any wind and a great temperature. Gamers were split up onto two fields to hit some 16 inch bombs. THE rake showed they are by far the superior HR Derby team right now hitting bomb after bomb leading them to a 98+ point margin of victory over the rest of the field. All In Boys and Under the Radar balanced out the top 3 in the low 200's with ILL Gamers just behind. In individual action Jay Bucy, Justin Carley and Billy Lyons put on a show. Justin started things off going for 98 hitting NO 5 pointers. MVG Jay Bucy came up his second round and hit for 59 hitting tons of bombs. But that was no match for his teammate Billy Lyons who came up next. The big lefty hit some massive homeruns and scored a record breaking 71 in one round. Giving him 124 for the 2 rounds and an easy championship and a new record! It was quite a show.
Tidbits:
Nobody hit for 0 points! Way to get one Nick!!!
Brian Herron DOMINATED the 1's hitting 10 of them!
Billy Lyons also broke the record for most 5's hitting 14 5 pointers in his 2 rounds.

Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
|
Sure Shot was held at Illinois State University, Horton Fieldhouse North Gym. An air conditioned facility with plenty of room. Perfect. Somewhat of a down shooting event with no team finishing in our top 9 scores ever. But that didn't keep THE rake from hitting on all cylinders. They took the 1st place title hitting 315 just as they did in Pekin 2008. All In Boys and Clown Punchers finished out the top 3. As for individuals, MVG Jay Bucy took the title followed closely by Justin Carley and Getaway Games co-founder Joel Peterson.
Tidbits:
Joel Peterson hit 7 10 pointers which was comparable to his mark in Pekin.

Golf Summary:
|
Golf was once again held at Ironwood Golf Course just as it was last year. A few "cart issues" held up play a bit but the last team teed off just after 2:00 and just 15-25 minutes later than expected. 16 teams had a great time out on the links and the drinks started flowing for most of the teams that were not in contention. Nobody hit the PlayerMania.com hole in one but we had a couple close calls within 4-5 feet. The All In Boys took the early lead hitting at 10 under through 10 with a number of spectacular putts. But in the end, Under the Radar finished out on top marking at -11 followed by the All In Boys at -10 and No Earls Anthony at -10.
Tidbits:
-14 won this event last year but Controlled Chaos could not return this year.
Several eagles were had throughout the day.

Texas Hold'em Summary:
|
Coming into Hold'em the overall title was still a 3 team race. The All In Boys had a nice 4 rank lead over THE rake and Under the Radar. But shortly into Hold'em former MVG Wes Adams took a hit and went out early crushing THE rake's chances of winning a 2nd title. As play went on, the "boys" kept on winning. Under the Radar was still challenging and playing some great cards - but the All In Boys were not letting down. They finished with 3 in the Top 10 and won the Hold'em event hands down. Ben Marquardt of Under the Radar led them to a 2nd place Hold'em and 2nd place overall by winning the Hold'em individual tourney. He just outlasted Adam Johnson of Bound for Last to take all the chips.
Tidbits:
Soon we will have stats for "knockouts" team and player.
