Congrats to the All In Boys on winning their 2nd consecutive Getaway Games event. The won the Bloomington/Normal event in a truly amazing comeback fashion. Down by 7 ranks going into the last sport (Texas Hold'em) the boys dominated Hold'em with all 4 guys placing in the top 10 giving them the 1st place rank with an OVS of 19. The leader at the time - Controlled Chaos - didn't get the cards and went out in Hold'em in a disappointing 9th place leaving them 1 behind the All In Boys for the Overall Championship with an OVS of 20. Team E-Town finished directly behind in 3rd place with an OVS of 23.

Overall, it was a very talented, fun and competitive event. The weather was unbelievable - not too hot, no rain, perfect! You can check all team scores, team rankings, individual scores and individual rankings at anytime below. Check back very soon for a full event picture gallery. Thanks to everyone who came out for the Normal Getaway Games event - we will see you all next year if not in Champaign on the 22nd of September.

Bowling Summary:
All started well at Circle Lanes in Bloomington for the 2007 Bloomington/Normal Getaway Games event. Players started arriving close to 6:00 AM and all were checked in and accounted for by 6:45 AM. The Stumblebums were the last to 'stumble' through the doors but that's expected to stay fit with their team name! Players were allowed a small bowling warmup period before the rules were announce. Prominent gamers, former champs and sponsors were all announced as follows:

Prominent Gamers:
?Doug Orrick (Insight) - holds single season assist record of 323 at ICC
?Chris Martin (Team E-Town) - Former Division 3 All-American basketball player and currently plays professional basketball in Luxembourg.
?Skipp Schaefbauer (The Little Rascals) - 92/93 Minnesota's Mr. Basketball and All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention at Illinois State.

Former Champs:
?Lions - won the bowling team event in Pekin. (2 replacement guys)
?All In Boys - won 1st Place OVERALL in the Pekin event in June, reigning champions. They also were team champs in HR Derby and Sure Shot.
?Justin Carley (All In Boys) - won individual Sure Shot and HR Derby in Pekin event in June

Sponsors:
?Insight Media (Brian McClanahan of team Insight) - Insight is a major sponsor for the B/N games.

The bowling action started up just after 7:00 and the guys were ready to roll. Jason Jenkins and Paul Watkins both jumped out of the gate with 5 or 6 consecutive strikes showing that they were going to be forces to reckon with in bowling. After their hopes of a 300 mark were shattered they ended the first game with impressive 267 and 236 finishes. Kyle Baner threw a 235 which toppled his previous best mark. Followed by Erik Nelson of bowling favorite Controlled Chaos with a 230. So after the first game of bowling the Bogey Men, led by free agent signing Paul Watkins, were leading with 787 pins followed by Controlled Chaos with 748. Defending bowling champs, Lions, were just behind with a 720.

Game two was much of the same. Jason Jenkins dominating and throwing a Getaway Games record 279 followed by Matt Bainters 243 and Keith Mervis 225. The Bogey Men finished off their bowling day with a record 1545 pins and taking 1st place in bowling followed by Controlled Chaos with 1409. The individual 1st place went to Jason Jenkins, of Submerged in Winning Juice, with a dominating 546 pins.

Tidbits
  • There were only a total of 2 scores under 100.
  • There were 16 scores over 200.
  • Kyle Baner of Team E-Town bowled a 235 in game 1 then just a 136 in game 2.
  • Matt Bainter has finished in the top 5 in both Getaway Games events.

    16 inch HR Derby Summary:
Talk about the perfect facility - the Illinois State Baseball field was just that. The field looked awesome with the tiered lines, tier markings, buckets of balls and gamers all over. This was the first event with the 5 tiers (140,160,180,200,220) and where all four hitters had to hit. Defending softball champs, All In Boys, got the draw to hit first this time. Led by Justin Carley's 93 they came out very strong and put up 184 points. Team E-Town came up just short when they hit 181. But E-Town gamer Chris Martin overtook Justin Carley for the individual softball top score of 101. Then came up the big hitters from Dynasty (aka The Hammer Brothers). Kevin Hammer belted out 76, Tim Walls hit 58 and Jeff Hammer knocked out 52 to lead Dynasty to 212 points and a 1st place finish.

The wind was blowing slightly in from left field and the weather was perfect. Not to hot and a bit cloudy.

    Tidbits
  • Skipp Schaefbauer of the Little Rascals showed the most improvement going from 10-31 in RD1-RD2.
  • Look out for Tim Morefield in future events. He seemed to 'figure' some things out and should dominate in the future.

    Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
Horton Fieldhouse was plenty big to accomodate the 52 shooters for this event. Guys had 3 courts to warmup and get lose on before coming to the Sure Shot court and taking their shots. An overwhelming amount of shooters turned out for this event. Skipp Schaefbauer put up an early 110 to take the lead but was erased shortly by teammate Dan Engle who put up a 120 giving the Little Rascals an early team lead with 350. Jason Proehl of the Stumblebums put up a 125 to take the individual lead shortly after. Then the former champs, The All In Boys, came up and Tony Pippin caught FIRE. Tony hit 16 3's in one round giving him a record 80 for one round. He followed up with a 50 giving him the lead at 130. Justin Carley wasn't too shabby either putting up 120 giving the All In Boys the lead at 395. But Chris Martin and Team E-Town were having none of it. They came up and matched All In Boys shot for shot. With one round remaining, Team E-Town was down by 73 points. Luckily, they had current professional basketball player Chris Martin steppin to the court. They strategized for a bit and Martin came out firing 10's and 5's!!!! He drilled his first 2 10's and his first 2 5's giving him a great start. But then slowed down. With just 12 seconds to go Martin needed 15 more points for the win. He managed to drill his next three 3 pointers to make Horton Fieldhouse erupt in cheers and giving Team E-Town the Sure Shot 1st place with 397. The 75 also gave Chris the individual award at 135. Can any team put up a 400? Thats the mark to shoot for.

    Tidbits

    Golf Summary:
Was not much time for lunch as teams had about an hour in between their shooting/hitting and their golf tee times. The teams tee'd off at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal at noon. The last team was tee'd off by 1:40 PM. Rain was in the forecast and supposed to come about 3:00 PM. Golf was absolutely dominated by one team. Controlled Chaos golfed a Getaway Games record -14 running away with the 1st place Golf team. Team E-Town finished at -10 followed up by a handful of -8 scores. Everyone was fortunate that the rain held off and actually split off right before it got to Bloomington/Normal.

    Tidbits
  • Several teams had some nice eagle holes!
  • Controlled Chaos golfed Ironwood on Friday evening and had guys shoot par and +2 individually.

    Texas Hold'em Summary:
So everyone was in the clubhouse and ready to eat by 6:00 PM. Avanti's was ordered and the gamers hammered down some spaghetti and bread. Note to directors - when you have 52 hungry, exhausted, athletic gamers - order for 80+ people instead of 60! The food was great and then prizes were given out. Controlled Chaos seemed to have a solid grip on the overall championship with a 4 point lead over Team E-Town and a 7 point lead over the All In Boys. 7 tables were loaded and ready to go. Things began at a frantic pace and not 20 minutes into the game, people were knocked out left and right. No real BIG chip leader had emerged at this point. But Team E-Town had 2 guys go out real early putting them in a horrible spot to win the overall. As we got down to the final 10 players - one thing was apparent. There were still all 4 All In Boys remaining. IMPRESSIVE. They all four went out fairly quickly in the top 10 and it came down to a showdown between Mark Lienhart and Chris Hammer. The battle went back and forth and back and forth. Finally, Chris Hammer emerged as the individual Hold'em Champ!!! The All In Boys won the team award with a 29 total score. Followed by the Lions, Submerged in Winning Juice and Insight. Controlled Chaos finished in a disappointing 9th place moving them into 2nd place overall behind the All In Boys.

Final awards were give out and everything was wrapped up by 11:15.

    Tidbits
  • Jeff Hammer of Dynasty was the first player to exit the tournament. Chris Hammer won the tournament.
  • All four All In Boys were in the top 10.
