Luckily the success of an event is not based on the number of teams. The Champaign turnout wasn't the best, but the quality of the event was at it's highest. Teams and players from Central Illinois, Champaign, St. Louis and Phoenix gathered on Saturday for the 3rd ever Getaway Games event. The weather was perfect and the competition was fierce. The All In Boys snuck by with their 3rd consecutive championship, just edging out THE rake by a point. The facilities were great to work with and were first class facilities. Thanks to everyone involved and look forward to growing and expanding Champaign in 2008.

    Bowling Summary:
Committed to Fun might not be the best overall teams, but boy can they bowl! These guys put up a 1383 beating the rest of the competition by over 100 pins. Led by 59 year old Gordon Frobish, Committed to Fun placed all 4 guys in the top 10. All In Boys finished with a surprising 2nd in bowling with Submerged in Winning Juice right behind them. THE rake, pre-event favorites, finished in a disappointing 4th place with the Rookies and Dunder Mifflin behind them. STL based, Dunder Mifflin made it clear from the start that bowling was NOT why they were there.

In the individual action, Jason Jenkins won his 2nd straight title bowling a 226-222 (448). Matt Bainter was in 2nd with a 371 followed by Gordon Frobish.

A special thanks to Western Bowl as they were kind, on time, and easy to work with. Definitely a place to bowl if you are in the area!!!

    Tidbits:
  • Bob Moreno of Submerged increased from 95 to 162 (67 pins) from GM1 to GM2.
  • Jason Jenkins won the event but still shot 98 pins lower than Bloomington.
  • Wes Adams placed 4th in Pekin with a 389 yet finished 3rd to last with a 244 in Champaign.

    16 inch HR Derby Summary:
It was a gorgeous day on the softball field. Time was not an issue so the teams had plenty of time for their rounds. The wind was blowing slightly out to left field but in a bit for the left handers. Baseball phenomena Dunder Mifflin put up the first big score with a 197. Not long after, Pekin champs All In Boys put up an unheard of 259. The very next team, THE rake put up a Getaway Games record 262 to take 1st place in HR Derby.

Individually, Justin Carley won with 115. Followed by Chris Whitaker with 90 and Andy Thiel with 88. Ben and James Hutton rounded out the top 5.

    Tidbits:
  • This is Justin Carley's 2nd Softball championship.
  • No indivudals hit 0.
  • All in Boys had 2 lefty's that may have hurt them due to wind.
  • 212 won Bloomington in comparison to the 262 in Champaign.

    Basketball Sure Shot Summary:
Basketball Sure Shot went smooth as always. Brookens Gym was a nice place for shooting hoops. This is All In Boys sport and they proved it. They put up an early 430 that held on and won by 150+ points. The Rookies fought off Dunder Mifflin for 2nd place with 285 and 256.

Tony Pippin took home the individual sure shot crown with a 135 which tied the best score ever. Justin Carley was behind him with a 120 followed by Matt Smith with a 100.

    Tidbits:
  • Tony Pippin has now shot 115, 130, 135 in his 3 events. Sick!
  • All In Boys placed all in the top 10.
  • Jarrod Stock had the biggest improvement jumping from 10 in RD 1 to 50 in RD 2.
  • A total of 7 TEN pointers were hit.

    Golf Summary:
We could not have asked for a more perfect day for golf. Perfect weather, no wind, great temps! The course was in great shape as well and nice and open - which is perfect for a Getaway Gamer. Submerged in Winning Juice was on fire and shot a -12 to take home the golf championship. They were crushing drives, sinking putts and hit for an eagle even. THE rake finished in 2nd with a -7, followed by Dunder Mifflin with -6 and All In Boys with -6.

    Tidbits:
  • -12 is the 2nd highest Getaway Games score ever.
  • Justin Clark of the winning golf team also won the golf event in Pekin (with a different team).
  • The Rookies tried screwing things up by teeing off on hole 1 of the WRONG course (orange instead of blue).

    Texas Hold'em Summary:
The day was capped off with Hold'em. The Elks Lodge was a perfect facility for this with tons of room. If they would have had clear receptions on their tv it would have been 100% perfect. Tons of pizza's came and the gamers dominated some food. Exhausted mentally and physically, the tourney began around 7:00 PM shortly after the first prize ceremony.

This tourney featured 3 tables of 8 gamers. The overall race was still very much in play as the All In Boys held just a 3 point lead in the overall rankings. A third place finish in Hold'em guaranteed them the championship overall. Play was very slow to start with not a lot of aggressive play. This started to pick up about an hour in. Submerged in Winning Juice, Mark Fonger, was the first to exit which really hurt Submerged chances at the overall. Gamers started dropping quicker and quicker and before you knew it, All In Boys had 3 guys OUT and THE rake had all 4 remaining. This was gonna get close.

The final table featured J Brown of All In Boys who needed every last spot in order to bring home the overall championship. Matt Bainter who was final table in B/N and Justin Clark who was final table in Pekin. Loaded final table. Guys got knocked out fairly quickly leaving Matt and J as the final two. Just about 10:30 hit and Matt finally did J in winning his first individual Hold'em championship. THE rake won the team hold'em easily, followed up by The Rookies and (you guessed it) The All In Boys. 3rd place was just enough for them to squeak out their 3rd overall championship and take the $800 in StubNation.com tickets!

    Tidbits:
  • THE rake has now placed 1st, 2nd, 1st in Hold'em in the 3 events.
